Saluangs are very much like flutes with their long and slender bodies. They are made of very thin bamboo with four holes along its length. They are around 3-4cm in diameter and 40-60cm in length. People who play the Saluang have perfected a technique to play fluently using a single breath for a 5 minute song. The instrument is originally from the native people of west Sumatra or the Minangkabau people.
